Ecclesiastically, this map is headed with a 12th century carving from Malmsbury church porch; with George Herbert and Salisbury cathedral also prominent in one corner. Stonehenge and three different white horses (at Bratton, Gherhill and Alton Priors) appear to provide a pagan balance of sorts. William Pitt, Christopher Wren and old Wiltshire horned sheep are also celebrated. Disturbingly, it is noted that in 1816 the Royal Mail coach was attacked by a lion on Winterslow Hill.

Publication Essentials
Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.Map Details
