"The best modern poet." - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

 

Cowper, born in 1731, was a popular poet during his lifetime; a Latin scholar at Westminster he also became a renowned hymn-writer. He struggled with periods of poor mental health and was for some time committed to an asylum. He died aged 68 in 1800.
