During the summer of 1920, two survivors of the First World War, Tom Birkin and Charles Moon, found themselves in the heart of the English countryside. While the first restores a medieval fresco, the second, an archaeologist, has set up his tent in the neighboring field, where he digs trenches, looking for the missing tomb of a local notable. More than fifty years later, Tom Birkin summons his memories – the splendor of the place, the beauty of the pastor's wife, and his discussions with Charles. The wounds of war then gradually give way to contemplation.
Published in 1980, this novel by JL Carr, winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize and shortlisted for the Booker Prize, is a wonderful tribute to the country where it was born, mixing nostalgia and humor.
