"A profound and poetic genius, a gentle and humane soul." - Virginia Woolf
Born in Dorset in 1840 and considered to be one of England's finest novelists, penning classics such as Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Far from the Madding Crowd, Hardy also published over 1000 poems in his lifetime. After his death in 1928 his ashes were scattered in Westminster Abbey and his heart was buried in a family grave in Stinsford.
One of JL Carr's favourite writers, this collection of 13 poems by Hardy includes The Darkling Thrush, Beyond the Last Lamp and In Time of The Breaking of Nations. The line drawings punctuating the text are by Christopher Fiddes.
