"The language is unlike the language of other poets" - Samuel Johnson
Born in 1716, educated at Eton and then Cambridge where he spent many years as a scholar and Fellow; Gray was the dominant poetic writer in the time before the Romantic movement. He died in 1771 in Cambridge but was buried in Stoke Poges, thought to be the setting for his Elegy.
He was not prolific but his reputation was assured with his masterpiece an Elegy written in a Country Churchyard which is printed in this Pocket Book. The cover and illustrations within are by Christopher Fiddes.
