The famous Staffordshire bull terrier appears in one corner, opposite a Tamworth pig in the other; itself hiding a good distance from the startling recipe for black pudding. Dr (Samuel) Johnson features prominently (consider also our Pocket Book of his sayings) alongside the cathedral in Lichfield. Spode, Wedgewood and the Gladstone pottery celebrate Stoke-on-Trent, with help from Stanley Matthews. Also honoured is the great Sid Barnes of Smethwick who bowled out the first five Australians for six runs in 1911.

Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.
