Lincoln cathedral dominates the uppermost part of the Map whilst St Mary's at Stamford, St James' in Louth and the Boston guildhall also all feature. The scenes in the lower section are from the psalter of the Luttrell family of Irnham and show farm life in the 14th century. Famous faces associated with Lincolnshire include Alfred Tennyson, Isaac Newton and Charles, Susannah and John Wesley. There are instructions on how to make Grantham gingerbread and also the risks of riding in Lincoln Lane: "I lost my mare in Lincoln Lane, I'll never find her there again; she lost a shoe, and then lost two, and threw her rider in the drain."

Publication Essentials
Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.Map Details
