Grand-daughter of Charles Darwin, Gwen Raverat was born in 1885. Educated at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL, she is best known as a wood engraver of great originality and skill; and as the author of the classic childhood memoir Period Piece. She was also a founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers. She died in 1957.
As part of the Pocket Book series of engravers, this picture book contains 16 pages of Raverat's engravings; including images from Daphnis and Chloe (1928), Cambridge Book of Poetry for Children (1932) and The Bird Talisman (1939).

Publication Essentials
Pocket-sized at 15 x 10.5cm (6 x 4" in old money) and slightly larger than the rest of the series, comprising 16 pages with a firm card cover. This little volume is just one in the series of Carr's Pocket Books; they hover between a greeting and a present and make a lasting alternative to a birthday card. In cold bedrooms, only one hand need suffer exposure. A distinguished novelist recommends them for reading in the bath and an ambassador claims they can be palmed from the cuff during tedious speeches or profitless sermons.Delivery Information

Special Editions
By virtue of their very nature some of our Special Editions are in vintage condition. For signed Maps this may mean the corners have been slightly bent or there is some minor discolouration along the edge; any issues should be resolved when the Map is mounted and framed. Early edition Pocket Books may have minor marks to the cover or edges; they could be considered ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ second-hand condition. Any specific damage beyond age appropriate wear and tear will be listed in the item description.
Reviews
I recently asked if their Gwen Raverat Artist's Pocket Book was available, received a prompt reply, ordered the book (no postage charge!) and received it very quickly, packaged carefully in the good old fashioned way in which one used to receive items from booksellers. Very good and clear printing of the wood engravings despite the small size of the booklet. And by the way, an excellent website.
