"The great Secretary of Wisdom and all Learning" - Izaac Walton
Sir Francis Bacon was born in 1561, son of the Lord Keeper of the Seal he was well positioned for a career in politics. An MP for many years he rose to become attorney general and Lord Chancellor of England. Highly regarded, until claims of corruption tarnished his legacy, as a statesman he was also known for his empirical thinking and founding of the 'scientific method'. Bacon published his 'Essayes: Religious Meditations. Places of Perswasion and Disswasion. Seene and Allowed' in 1597; a collection of 10 political critiques. It was re-published the year before his death (in 1626) as an extended edition comprising 58 essays.
This Pocket Book covers six of these, including Of Death, Of Revenge and Of Marriage and Single Life.
Unfortuntely, the binding staples have rusted and affected the centre page (see the 3rd image in the gallery); the remainder of the publication is undamaged.
