Two gold Roman coins minted in Colchester dominate the top third of the Map and the Roman connection continues with a sketch of Emperor Claudius. Clacton-on-Sea is celebrated for its lifeboat which sailed to Dunkirk in 1940, Dagenham for a stranded whale in 1658 and Harlow for a huge willow that was made into 1179 cricket bats. Depicted in the North Sea is a fleet of different types of boats, including the schooner Essex Lass, a Colne cutter and a Leigh bawley. Tucked away is a rare recipe for a famous cure-all known as the Essex lard-jacket.

Publication Essentials
Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.Map Details
