Durham cathedral dominates the head of the Map whilst churches at Jarrow and Escombe also feature. A Weardale sheep is described in miniature (including colloquial counting methodology) whereas the Durham ox is very much larger. The Venerable Bede is depicted with an extract from his chronicles; also from Jarrow is Charles Palmer and his shipyard. The Stockton steam passenger railway service is also depicted.

Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.
