At Barnstaple it is remembered that 3 witches were murdered by public hanging in 1682; whereas in 1814 at Lew Trenchard a Henry Frise, poet, having sold an ode for 5 shillings bought a wife for half a crown. From a culinary perspective the Paignton pudding and Marldon apple pie fair are enriched with a description of the technique used for producing clotted cream.
