An eclectic collection of festive illustrations, engravings, aphorisms, verses, biblical passages and quizzes. A quite unique Christmas gift.

From a literary perspective this Pocket Book contains lines by Tennyson (The Time Draws Near the Birth of Christ), Shakespeare (When Icicles Hang by the Wall) and Hardy (The Oxen). But also, a passage from Luke (2:15), the Royal Family's recipe for Christmas pudding, fabled sayings from Sydney Smith and a series of riddles (for intellectual grandparents); all inset amongst beautiful engravings from Thomas Bewick and George Mackley.

Pocket-sized at 13 x 9.5cm (5 x 3.5" in old money) and comprising 16 pages with a firm card cover. This little volume is just one in the series of Carr's Pocket Books; they hover between a greeting and a present and make a lasting alternative to a birthday card. In cold bedrooms, only one hand need suffer exposure. A distinguished novelist recommends them for reading in the bath and an ambassador claims they can be palmed from the cuff during tedious speeches or profitless sermons.

    A Christmas Book

I am a great admirer of J L Carr's work so I bought this little book for my bedside table, at Christmas. It's only a small publication but has some delightful poems, texts and illustrations. It would make a simple gift, just the right size to pop in with a Christmas card. A seasonal treat.
