The Cheshire Cat makes up one corner of this broadly square Map with regimental crests and coats of arms in the others. Local luminaries such as George Mallory and John Bradshaw are celebrated; alongside Mr MacDonald of Cheadle, a Wesleyan minister who had 4 daughters, 2 of whom would become mothers to Rudyard Kipling and Stanley Baldwin. There is a somewhat macabre dedication to a Mrs Beswick of Sale and a wholly appropriate one to cartographer John Speed of Farndon. Do not miss the recipe for Chester pudding.

Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.
