Amongst many others, this Map pays tribute to Alexander Pope at Binfield, the Duke of Cumberland (who conceived the Ascot Races) and King Alfred who was born in historic Berkshire. Architectural features include the famous White Horse (accompanied by lines from GK Chesterton), Donnington Castle, Virginia Water and a remarkable medieval cob dwelling at Wallingford. There are also dedications to the famous Berkshire breed of pigs and the village schoolmaster at Aldermaston who is said to have propagated the first Williams pear.

Poster-sized and litho printed on quality card in numbered limited editions, this is one in a series of pre-1974 county area Maps. Designed for framing and to stimulate conversation, JL Carr created the Maps as a way to present an optimistic set of testimonials to our indigenous, daring and buoyant forbears and to hearten those Englishmen who hope for a rekindling of the spirit which has enlivened our nation through its chequered history. These architectural, historical, literary and pictorial curiosities are not to be used for navigation; except in the broadest of terms.
